7 Beliefs that Are Killing Your Progress
I am often asked what is the difference between business owners that have outrageous success, and others that struggle. The surprising answer is “mindset” Being decisive, driven, self-disciplined, creative, assessing risk and many of the other things that make someone wildly successful are all driven by the mind. On the flip side, being ruled by some misguided or limiting beliefs left over from old experiences can do a lot of damage to ones ability to put up numbers in the “win” column for themselves. Check out these 7 common limiting beliefs and ask yourself if you ever think these things.
- I’m Not Ready – One of the most common limiting beliefs that keeps owners from their success is “I am not Ready”. Owners can feel they need to get things more organized, learn a bit more, see more examples, or countless other things before they are “ready” to take action. This “running in place” is a false decoy, and being “ready” may never come. The truth is that you are perpetually learning, growing and improving, and your next move will be another phase of development towards your success. Stop waiting to be ready and take action today!
- I Don’t Know How – Many people put their dreams in a holding pattern because they believe that they don’t know how to take the next step. The fact is that nobody really knows how when they are exploring something new. They just take an audit of what they do know and then pull together their best plan based on research, take a class, learn new things and taking a little calculated risk. The key to success is to put your ego aside and don’t be afraid to take some awkward steps on your way to your next progression.
- I Don’t Have Time – We are all are limited by the daily, ticking 24 hour clock. But, there are some times when you feel completely buried with no end in sight, and others when clarity is laser focused and you crank out major work that changes your business forever; like implementing a new training program, a new pricing structure that brings in a ton of new clients or executing a growth plan that has you cherry picking the best profit, and cutting out the dead-weight tasks. Make your dreams a priority right now, and make time for the thing s that are “important” and you will be surprised where you found the time.
- I Don’t Have an Ivy league Education – Success for an entrepreneur is often a lot more about Street Smarts than books smarts. Yes, an education always helps, but its true grit and willingness to do what it takes to be successful that is more of a factor in business success. Seek out learning wherever you are and then focus on applying what you know.
- It’ll Just Happen Eventually – No it won’t. Nobody gets “discovered” or is handed opportunities by being passive. Sometimes we mistakenly think if we wait long enough that our time will come, but it does not work like that. There is “No time like the present”. If you want something to happen you have to make it happen. It’s Getter done time.
- I Don’t Have to Continually Learn New Skills – Just because you run your own business does not mean that you can “set it and forget it” with your learning. The world constantly evolves extremely fast, and there is no time to rest on your laurels. Instead each new year, review your previous year, and make a list of new skills that you added to your toolbox. If your list is shorter than you like then it’s time for some serious growth this next year. Make some goals of what skills you want to add.
- I Need to be Perfect – Sometimes we take the “make a great first impression” way too far. Yes, first impressions are important and it is always good to be prepared before beginning a task…But, “perfect” is an unattainable standard. In fact, in this modern, disconnected age, while you are busy being perfect, your competition has already started and is molding and sculpting their service/product in real time, in rapid iteration based on client feedback. By the time you come to market with your “perfect” item your competition is on their 5th version that meets the clients’ needs perfectly because they spent their time testing and listening to the clients and what they want.
You started and built your business and that is no easy task. Take a look at your mindset and remove and limiting road blocks, so you can tap into the power that you know you have!
